What is the New Economy?

The values and institutions of our current economy drive it to self-organize toward ever growing economic instability, environmental destruction, concentration of wealth, and political corruption. In the face of this four-fold crisis , a complete systemic change is necessary to create a New Economy that is built upon three pillars: ecological balance, equitable distribution, and real democracy.

A New Economy must achieve ecological balance between human consumption and the regenerative capacity of the Earth while simultaneously working to heal and nurture Earth's biosphere.

The distribution of real wealth must be equitable in order to build communities that are healthier, more democratic, and more resilient in the face of crises.

A living democracy will establish true popular sovereignty that roots power in local communities -- not in corporate or moneyed interests -- to ensure economic and political accountability to the people.

How do we get there?

Transitioning to the New Economy will require a radical rewriting of our cultural story, widespread public action, and the creation of new policies that favor the interests of people, communities, and nature.

Given the scope and complexity of the political and cultural changes required to bring about the New Economy, it is helpful to group needed initiatives into several cross-collaborative categories. Each focuses on a systemic failure of the Old Economy.

New Economy Transition (NET) discussion sessions are a collaboration between the New Economy Coalition and the New Economy Working Group. These sessions focus on specific systemic changes that will accelerate the transition to a New Economy. Explore the different discussions and continue the discussion in the forum.
